How a Hotel Check-In Became a Lesson in Humility and Discipleship
Modeling Faith in Everyday Moments
I remember recently checking into a hotel with my family. It had been a long day of travel, and we were all eager to relax and jump into the pool. I had booked the hotel online — no reviews, no photos, just an unbeatable price in the area. That should’ve been my first red flag.
When we arrived, the outdated decor in the lobby gave me an uneasy feeling. Sure enough, the room was old, dark, and honestly, pretty grungy. It didn’t meet even the most basic standards of clean and comfort for my family. I kindly explained this to the front desk clerk — who, thankfully, was very understanding — and requested a refund.
We then headed to a second hotel, again booked online. This time, I insisted on seeing the room before paying. But due to their policy, the front desk agent declined. I was tired, stressed, and frustrated, and I let my emotions speak louder than my faith. My voice raised, and I explained my ordeal a bit too forcefully. She and I were both firm in our positions — and getting nowhere.
Then I looked over at my kids.
Their faces were filled with disappointment. And in that moment, I remembered why we were there in the first place: for them. A simple getaway, a chance to swim and be together. More importantly, I remembered who I represent — not just a mother, but a follower of Jesus.
God gently reminded me to show grace, humility, and love — even when I didn’t feel like it.
So I tried again, this time speaking to the front desk manager with calmness and honesty. I simply said, “I’m just looking for a clean, safe space for me and my children.” What I didn’t know is that God was already working behind the scenes. The manager had reached out to leadership, asking for permission to let us preview the room.
We met in the middle. And as it turned out, that stay became one of the best hotel experiences we’ve ever had. The service was amazing, the room was perfect, and more than anything — my heart was at peace.
A Teachable Moment
Jesus reminded me that no matter the situation, I am His disciple. And I need to carry myself like it — especially in the small, unseen moments.
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
— John 13:35 (KJV)
Later, as my kids were splashing in the pool, one of them said, “Mom, I’m proud of you for listening to God’s voice instead of just getting mad.”
Their words hit me deeply. It reminded me that our children are always watching. Not just when we lead devotionals or take them to church — but when we’re tested, tired, and stretched thin.
I’m not perfect. I’m a perfectly imperfect parent, trying every day to follow the one who is perfect — Jesus Christ.
Equip
Here’s a verse you may already know, but let it serve as a fresh reminder from the Lord’s Prayer — for any moment when you need to pause and surrender:
“Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
— Matthew 6:10 (KJV)
Empower: A Prayer for Parents
Dear Heavenly Father,
You are good, present, and full of mercy.
I’m not perfect — but I know You are.
Help me to lead with grace, speak with love, and model faith even in frustrating moments.
Equip me to reflect Your character to my children, not just in word, but in deed.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Encourage
If you find yourself overwhelmed or frustrated today, I encourage you to pause and invite God into that moment. Just like I had to humble myself before God and my children, you can too. Speak life, truth, and grace — even when your emotions tempt you otherwise. Our kids don’t need perfect parents. They need present parents who walk humbly with God.
You’ve got this — and God’s got you.
